Interview: Cj Miller

Tell us about yourself.

Full-time mom, part-time IT professional, and a full-time writer. Coffee’s an essential part of my day. Busy, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I love hearing from readers. I’m running a book giveaway on my website: http://www.cj-miller.com (Giveaways tab).

Share a bit about your latest book or what you’re currently working on.

My latest release is Shielding the Suspect and I have a book out in November, Protecting His Princess. I am working on a book that is tied into Protecting His Princess. At any given time, I usually have 2-3 books in various stages of completion.

What do you like the most about romantic suspense?

The strong, alpha heroes and brave heroines who must work together when lives – and love – are at stake.

Do you write other genres? If so, what are they?

I also write contemporary and paranormal romances and have plans to publish across genres in the future. I like to stretch my creative muscles by writing whatever comes to mind.

Who are some of your favorite romantic suspense authors?

The list changes and grows weekly, but recent reads I’ve enjoyed Include Cindy Gerard, Cindy Dees, Kylie Brant, Roxanne St. Claire, Marie Force, Laura Griffin, and Suzanna Brockmann.

ShieldingTheSuspect

Do you write series, standalones, or both? If you write both, which is your most favorite to write?

I write standalone books, but I love turning secondary characters from one book into main characters in the next book.

What three things make the perfect villain in a suspense novel?

Solid motivation, that is well-developed.

That he or she believes strongly in their cause.

Powerful enough to present a real threat.

How has your experience been working with Harlequin?

My editors have been amazing. They are insightful and make my stories stronger with every keystroke. When I had my daughter last year, the senior editor of my line, Harlequin Romantic Suspense, sent my daughter a hand-knitted blanket, hat and booties when she was born. That’s a good anecdote that show how editors treat their authors- we’re a team.

What method of promotion do you find most rewarding and why?

The best promotion is writing more books and word-of-mouth. Readers who connect to a story want to read more and a recommendation from a friend is the best way to learn about new authors.

9780373278473

What method do you prefer as a reader, ebooks, or print? Why?

I used to be solidly in the print camp, but after getting a Kindle Paperwhite, I love it and I now prefer e-books. I can adjust the font, read in the dark and have access to new releases within seconds of purchasing them. The size is perfect – not too heavy so it fits in all my handbags. I also love the notes and search feature, because it makes it a great tool for research.

What’s a genre that you’re intimidated by but would like to write in?

I love reading paranormal and while I have book ideas in this genre, I think there are many great books and finding a new, exciting angle is rare.

I am a big fan of cross promotion between authors. Do you utilize cross promotion and if so, what cross promotion have you done?

I love interacting with authors on my blog and facebook account. I haven’t reached out to other authors yet to write for my site, but I’d love to have other authors guest blog. Stacy-Deanne – you are welcome on my site anytime!

What can readers expect from you next?

Protecting His Princess will be available in November from Harlequin Romantic Suspense.  I have a book coming out next May called Traitorous Attraction.

Interview: Sylvia Hubbard

Tell us about yourself.

I am first and foremost a person deeply and devoted to words – a writer and a reader, always wanting more. Words are my drugs. Words are my life. Words are my Everything. Being a mother, a woman and a human being becomes secondary in my life.

October will be the release of Emperor’s Heart – an romance suspense that brings out most of the Heart Family Series I’ve been working on for almost ten years. Who are some of your favorite romantic suspense authors?

Nora Roberts hands down and Beverly Jenkins.

Do you write series, standalones, or both?

I write both. If you write both, which is your most favorite to write? That’s hard to answer. All of my stories start as standalones and some then pan out to series.

What three things make the perfect heroine in a romantic suspense novel?

Growth, honesty and curves

What three things make the perfect villain in a suspense novel?

Selfishness, malice and a great smile

What is the most important thing you’ve learned from your writing?

Reality is harder to believe than fiction

Bloggers. They really get people talking about your writing.

What method to you prefer most as a reader, ebooks or print? Why?

Both. Ebooks because the ease to get them and read them and print because I just love to hold a good book in my hands.

What’s a genre that you’re intimidated by but would like to write in?

scifi/horror

What makes your work standout among the rest?

There’s never just one thing going wrong in the protagonists lives and the male protagonist always have a unique fault that could be scary to some, yet only the right woman can love them.

I am a big fan of cross promotion between authors. Do you utilize cross promotion and if so, what cross promotion have you done?

I did a Hotter in February promotion with an author where we posted interviews, reviews and features about each other on our websites. I sold more of my books that month than I usually did. I loved it and would love to do it again.

What can readers expect from you next?

Book 2 of the Emperor’s series called Emperor’s Heart then the release of His Substitute Wife… My Sister by the end of the year. Afterwards, I’m busy working on King’s Paradise and Stealing Innocence III: Lethal Heart which will hopefully come out by next year.

EXCERPT FROM EMPEROR’S HEART (release Oct 2, 2013):

Reese remembered how Eartha told her that Emperor designed the house specifically so that it was his own design – unique and relaxing, yet complex.

There was certainly complexity around this place, Reese thought as she mounted the stairs hoping she was going the right way.

As she came to the top of the darkened stairway, she opened the door in front of her and she was positive she stepped into some type of sinful pleasure den.

Black was the primary color scheme as she stared at the huge bed bathe in black silk sheets. Above her head, was a large sunroof with special shutters to block or give way to the sunlight. Currently the shutters were open and the room was soaked in natural light.

The black carpet was soft and soothing under her feet. Yet despite the rest of the opulent room, she couldn’t take her eyes off the bed and that was where she found herself standing next to. Slowly, she reached her hand out and placed it on the pillow that was still dented from his head. Leaning down, she buried her face in the silk fabric, smelling his essence still vibrant.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” a deep voice growled behind her.

She turned around and screamed at the naked giant holding a .22 caliber in her face.

Dropping the folder, she pressed her back against the nearest wall beside the bed, her light gray/blue eyes wide in fright.

Emperor Heart’s dark eyes looked in disbelief as he realized who she was, but that still didn’t prompt him to lower his gun because he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“What the fuck are you doing here?!” he repeated, but this time his tone was not so sharp.

Her lips moved, but nothing came out of her throat. All those witty remarks she had planned to say just left her brain as she took in his nakedness; Especially the long limp staff that went halfway down his thigh nestled in golf sized dark brown orbs the same shade as the rest of his skin with silky hairs neatly trimmed.

Interview: Geri Foster

Tell us about yourself.

I’ve been writing for ten years while learning my craft and mastering my voice. I belong to RWA, DARA, and Yellow Rose RWA chapters. I’m a full-time writer and live with my husband and my dog Lola.

Share a bit about your latest book or what you’re currently working on.

Currently I’m working on a novella in the Falcon Series.

What do you like the most about romantic suspense?

Oh God! The action of course.

Do you write other genres? If so, what are they?

I’m working on a Paranormal, but it’s like a Romantic Suspense with Warlocks and Vampires.

Who are some of your favorite romantic suspense authors?

Cherry Adair, Colleen Thompson, and Cindy Gerard

Do you write series, standalones, or both? If you write both, which is your most favorite to write?

I’m doing two series at this time. I haven’t done a standalone yet.

What three things make the perfect heroine in a romantic suspense novel?

Smarts, feisty, and stronger than she thinks.

What three things make the perfect villain in a suspense novel?

He has to be a dirty, rotten SOB that every reader wants to die.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned from your writing?

Mostly that I can do it. My friend and family often wonder how I come up with all this stuff.  I tell them I wonder why they don’t.

Are you trade published, self-published, or hybrid?

Self-Published

What method of promotion do you find most rewarding and why?

Facebook. I think there people get a sample of your personality.

What method do you prefer most as a reader, ebooks or print? Why?

Ebooks. I finally have half my house back.

What’s a genre that you’re intimidated by but would like to write in?

In my writing career, I always do what scares me most. So, if I think I want to write a certain genre, I’ll do just to see if I can. Hence, the Paranormal.

What makes your work standout among the rest?

I think it’s my pacing. In my reviews it’s always about how the plot zings. I like that.

I am a big fan of cross promotion between authors. Do you utilize cross promotion and if so, what cross promotion have you done?

I belong to a lot of groups so every chance I get. I’ll mention a friends book on FB or Twitter and on my launches.

What can readers expect from you next?

My novella is the story of the secretary for Falcon Securities. She’s had a rough life, but cleaned herself up with the help of her boss, when out of nowhere, her ex-pimp comes back for something Zoe doesn’t even know she has.

Interview: Laurel Handfield

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Laurel Handfield and I write novels. I’ve written picture books, young adult novels, adult novels and even upper middle grade and I love them all.

Share a bit about your latest book or what you’re currently working on.

Currently, I’m editing my latest romantic thriller, Champagne Life, which will be released in January 2014 by best-selling author Zane’s publishing company, Strebor Books International. It tells the tale of how far a married couple would go to get out of debt.

What do you like the most about romantic suspense?

I love creating a love story in the midst of chaos and suspense. Passion can happen in the most unusual or dire circumstances and romantic suspense demonstrates that.

Do you write other genres? If so, what are they?

Yes. I’ve written a historical fiction novel titled Unsinkable, which gives a fictional day-by-day account of the only black family on the Titanic. This novel was written under my penname Nicole Bradshaw. My first novel, My Diet Starts Tomorrow is a romantic comedy and my second novel, Mirror, mirror, was my initial introduction into the romantic suspense category. I wrote a picture book for kids titled, Cassi da Conch, which shows how kids can embrace their uniqueness.  Champagne Life is my second venture into the romantic suspense category and will be released in January 2014 under Strebor Books/Simon & Schuster.

Do you write series, standalones, or both? If you write both, which is your most favorite to write?

I write standalone mostly. However, I’m creating a new romantic suspense line for a publisher as we speak. It’s in the very beginning stages and may not even see the light of day, but creating the story is so much fun.

What three things make the perfect heroine in a romantic suspense novel?

It’s important to show the heroine’s strengths as well as weaknesses. Do this through the character’s actions throughout the story. In other words, I like to create a weepy mess of a character in the beginning who transforms into a fiery lioness by the end.

What three things make the perfect villain in a suspense novel?

Villains need to show vulnerability too but I also like badass villains who the reader can cheer on. It never hurts if the villain is hot. LOL!

What is the most important thing you’ve learned from your writing?

For me, the simpler the better. I want to get in, tell the story in an engaging way, and get out. Hopefully I will have left the reader satisfied.

Are you trade published, self-published, or hybrid?

I’m trade published but I wouldn’t rule out self-publishing. My first (and only) picture book is published by a smaller publisher.

What method of promotion do you find most rewarding and why?

I like doing blog tours and interviews. I’ve done book signings and don’t really feel comfortable doing so. It sometimes feels as though you’re begging for sales. Blog tours allow you to tell more about yourself and your writing journey, kind of like this.

What method to you prefer most as a reader, ebooks or print? Why?

I live out of the country so I prefer ebooks because it’s more economical and convenient. However, if I lived in the U.S. I think I’d prefer print.

Unsinkable_Cover

What’s a genre that you’re intimidated by but would like to write in?

I am a big horror buff so it amazes me that I am so intimidated to write in that genre. I did make one unsuccessful attempt. Will I ever go that route again? Never say never.

I am a big fan of cross promotion between authors. Do you utilize cross promotion and if so, what cross promotion have you done?

I definitely don’t do as much cross promotion as I should but I’ve joined groups on facebook and I’ve re-posted or “liked” a status to help get the word out. It’s always nice to see authors comment on or “like” other authors. I had no idea there were so many book clubs out there.

What can readers expect from you next?

My next novel, Champagne Life, will be released in January 2014 under my penname, Nicole Bradshaw. Here is the blurb:

Would you compromise your marriage for the sake of getting out of debt? Naomi and DeShaun think they have it all but the one important thing they lack is finances. Author Nicole Bradshaw craftily demonstrates what happens when Indecent Proposal meets Unfaithful and results in murder.

Champagne Life Excerpt:

The doctor listened to my heartbeat through the stethoscope. “How long have you been experiencing these symptoms?”

It all started around the time DeShaun and I lost our jobs. “About two months ago.”

The doctor listened intently again and then pulled the stethoscope from his ears. “Your heart rate is slightly elevated.”

            “Is that a problem?”

“Not really. However, higher heart rates normally signify other issues. It may be stress. Have you felt stressed lately?”

“Maybe some.” That was the understatement of the year.

“Okay,” he said. “We’re going to perform some tests. By your symptoms, you may have high blood pressure. I’ll have my nurse come in and run some tests.”

“How long until I get the results?”

“A couple of weeks. We’ll call you if the tests come back positive, otherwise, if you don’t hear from us, consider your health good.”

            “But what about the dizziness?”

“Stress affects the body in different ways. I suggest you take it easy. Take a vacay and relax. It’ll do you good.”

            A vacation? I wished.
